Why does the baseline need to be drawn in pencil?

A datum line mustn't be drawn in ink so that when you add the solvent while doing chromotography, the ink doesn't spread and it might even mix with the actual color that you are testing on and that could change the r f value whereas if you draw it with a pencil, the results would be more accurate.
