Why do cuckoos lay their eggs in other nests?

It gets them away from the burden of raising the chick.

The offspring survives at less effort from the parent(s).

For a bird, that's a win.

Evolution.

They aren't the only birds to do it either - one species of duck even does it.

The brown-headed cowbird does it also.
