What are the disadvantages of the archipelagos shape of the Philippines?

One of the many disadvantages of the archipelagos shape is its vulnerability to attack. The Philippines are surrounded by abundant water, but the islands are not safe against attack by other countries. As a neighbor of China, the Philippines are intimidated by its close proximity and belicose attitude. Malaysia, another neighboring country, also contests ownership of the Spratly Islands on the boundary of the Philippines.
