How do you round 0.998 to 2 decimal places?

Typically the rule is to round UP if the last number is greater than 5. So you begin with the first number on the far right. In 0.998, the number 8 is larger than the midpoint of 5 (midpoint of 1 to 10 is 5). So the 8 would be a 9. Secondly, you look at the 2 numbers at the far right, here 98. Again, 98 is above the midpoint of 50 (halfway between 1 and 100). So, you'd round up to the number 1.0 because the .998 all would be rounded UP.

As a comparison, let's say the number was 0.981. The farthest right number is 1, which is closer to zero. In this example, you cannot round the "81" up to 82... so you drop the 1. This results in a 2 decimal place answer of 0.98.
