Many of them were just hoping that they might be given some boots sometime! (Incidentally there were no left or right boots. Civil War boots were only one shape. You trod them in.)

In the later half of the war, many Confederates were doomed to stay barefoot, unless they won a battle, when they could strip the enemy of their boots - including the dead men.
