How do you define punishment?

'Punishment' can refer to one of the following:

1) the pain or loss suffered due to wrongdoing or failure to perform a duty

2) pain suffered as a result of rough treatment

3) toilsome exertion causing pain or suffering that makes a person stronger or improves his or her character or morale
