In what year did Malcolm X become the prominent leader of the Nation of Islam?

In 1946, Malcolm Little was convicted of burglary. While in jail, he received a letter from his brother who introduced him to the Nation of Islam. Sometime after this and before his parole in 1952, Little converted to Islam and adobpted the surname "X".
