How does the king schahriar and his brother story hold the interest of the reader?

It captivates the reader mainly because the story itself has a major twist, but most importantly, the characters trap the reader in the story. Firstly, the king is presented as a loving and caring man, but later on he's transformed into a murderer. Scheherazade is also interesting because she made sacrifices for her country.
