When were airbags mandatory?

Airbags became mandatory in the United States for all passenger vehicles starting with the 1998 model year. The requirement was established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of regulations aimed at improving vehicle safety. Prior to this, many manufacturers had already begun to include airbags in their vehicles as optional features.
