How did the battle of frenchtown happen?

American troops at Fort Detroit and in Frenchtown surrendered to British troops in the War of 1812. The citizens of Frenchtown pleaded to the government to push the British into Canada, at the time they felt threatened by the presence of British and Indian occupation.
