Stephen, one of the early Christian deacons, was accused of blasphemy against Moses and God by members of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. He was charged primarily by false witnesses who claimed he spoke against the temple and the law. In his defense, Stephen delivered a powerful speech recounting Israel's history and affirming Jesus as the Messiah, which ultimately enraged his accusers. As a result, he was condemned to death and stoned, becoming the first Christian martyr.
