There are several advantages. First, the on-the-job training can go a long way towards teaching you the basics to become a veterinary technician (the typical next-up-the-ladder career option). Second, you get to work on a medical team pretty quickly - there are relatively few entry-level medical jobs that you can work straight out of high school, and this is one of them. Third, you can be pretty flexible with your hours and your duties, depending upon the clinic you are working at - sometimes the vet assistant is also the supply manager, or the receptionist.
