+ Follow

1/2 lemon, juice of

2 Tbsp horseradish

2 Tbsp minced onion,

scallions, or shallots

2 Tbsp minced red or

green pepper, sweet or hot

1/4 cup minced dill pickle/gherkins/capers

1 clove garlic, minced

2 hard cooked eggs, yolks mashed, whites chopped

1 dash Tabasco Sauce

1/3 cup catsup

Combine all ingredients in a glass bowl. Mix well and chill well before using.

That may be one recipe used in another part of the country, but a recipe for the Frisch's tartar sauce used in the Midwest is this one:

2 cups Kraft Mayonnaise (NOT Miracle Whip, & not any other brand - won't taste the same)

1/2 cup Relish

1 Tbsp. Onion Powder

Using a wire mesh sieve, put relish in it and run hot water over all the relish until there is no pickle juice left on relish. Put to the side to drain. In large bowl, put in mayonnaise. Add onion powder and stir. Add drained relish and mix thoroughly.

Serve on Sandwiches or with fish. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator. Makes 2 cups.
