Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the Words FIVE CENTS. It may be blank or there may be a D or S. (The F on the front of the coin is the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

What are now called Type 1 buffalo nickels were minted early in 1913 and carry a slightly different design from those made later. The buffalo is standing on a raised mound and the Words FIVE CENTS are slightly smaller than on later coins. The design had multiple problems, causing excessive die breakage and holding up poorly in circulation, so the coin's designer and engraver modified it later than year to lower the mound and increase the size of the Words FIVE CENTS.
