How should the genus name be written?

Unlike the species name, the genus name of an organism can stand its own. When it is written alone, it must start with a capital letter and must be underlined if handwritten or italicized if typed.

Examples

• Plasmodium vivax (genus and species, must be underlined/italicized)
• Plasmodium (genus name only, must be underlined/italicized)
• P.vivax (genus shortened with species name, must be underline/italicized)
• vivax (should never be written, practically meaningless)
