What role did jack play in lord of the flies?

When Jack painted his face with red & white clay and added black lines with charcoal it acted like a mask, behind which he could watch the antics of the boy wearing the paint. It divorced or separated him from his own actions, so that he felt no remorse, no shame and no guilt for anything which the 'painted savage' did.
