A tree will have already undergone changes during the autumn, whne the decreased hours of sunlight (12-9 hours a day) caused the chlorophyll of leaves to die off, in turn making the leaves themselves lifeless. A tree will thus have stored nutrients during the summertime, which will be utilized during the winter months.
