The father of Queen Elizabeth II was Prince Albert, the Duke of York, the second son of King George V. When George died in January 1936, he was succeeded by Albert's older brother, who became Edward VIII. But Edward decided to abdicate the throne less than a year later because of his unpopular romance with American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson. As a result, Prince Albert became the new king in December 1936, taking the name George VI. He reigned until his death on February 6, 1952, and was succeeded by his eldest daughter Elizabeth.
