What attracted people to piracy?

Many merchant seaman working for companies, like the East India Trade Company, found their ships taken by pirates. These men were living in tough conditions for very little pay. Piracy offered them an opportunity to share in the vast wealth and live a "Robin Hood" lifestyle of sorts. Of course, unlike Robing Hood, they were robbing the rich and keeping it, not giving to the poor.
