In a democracy, participation by citizens is essential or the democracy will cease to exist. Thus, when citizens vote, they do their part to keep the democracy flourishing. Even if citizens do not always like the results of an election, they know that there will be a future election, and things can be changed at that time.

The alternative is voting with your feet - which can be a sign of apathy

or alienation from the democratic process. In decades gone by, men and women struggled for the right to vote. So voting could be seen as a way of

honouring their legacy.
