Why does Atticus decide to stop using guns?

Atticus thinks that hunting isn't something right, because God gave him an unfair advantage on the animals; for this reason he decide to stop using guns.

"maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living creatures. I guess he decided he wouldn't shoot till he had to."(last pages of chapter 10)
