Some common French main dishes include the obvious, like French Onion Soup (Soupe a l'Oignon), Chicken with Lemon (Poulet au Citron), Vegetable Casserole (Ratatouille), Green Salad (Salade Verte), French Bread (Pain), and Chocolate Mousse (Mousse au Chocolat).

They eat a lot of Crepes, chicken, beef, lamb, etc.

Miss Frenchie writes: its really difficult to name a typical dish for a country that is world famous for its food. Also different regions specialise in different foods and certain foods are more readily available at cerain times of the year (like Galette is had during January for Epiphany)...but here goes.

Breakfast:Croissant with Jam or butter, coffee, des petite gateaux (chocolate covered biscuits), prepackaged miniture toasted/grilled sliced bread. The French are not big breakfast eaters, and lunch rather than breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Which brings me to lunch....

Lunch: Light lunch consists of crepe (which is a thin pancake had with either butter and sugar or Nutella. Nutella is a chocolate spread and is so well known by the French that no one asks for chocolate spread....they just ask for Nutella. You can also have french bread with ham or whatever meatkind inside....its pretty 'on the go' so you normally see people eating that while they're walking to their next destination or on the Metro waitng for their stop...its the French's version of a fastfood hamburger....

A heavy lunch is usally offered in the form of a Plat du jour(meal of the day) consisting of three courses (entree, plat, et dessert). The plat can either be mussels, rabbit, beef or any other meat kind. In the coastal regions like La Rochelle sea food is a very common Plat. Lunch, like dinner is always served with french bread. Your meal will be with Western side orders like fries or baked potatoes. Cous Cous is also a popular meal. Desert is almost always some chocolate inspired dish

In winter and in the more northern regions and the Alpes, the typical food is fondue and raclette, which is melted cheese had with slicesof sausage and ham.

You may also consume hot wine (vin du chaud) as an Aperatif. warm sweetened red wine with Orange Juice (or some citrus)..its had during cold days and after skiing.

Dinner will take an entire page...but it usually consists of a 6 course meal accompanied with meal specific wine. Next time...
