What are the roots of the expression full monty Where does it come from?

It has been suggested that it comes from Field Marshall Mongomery, who believed in a full English breakfast every day when on his North Africa campaign. This meant the lot: eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, fried bread etc. So something which contains 'the works' is 'the full monty'.
