According to St. Luke (Luke 1:41), it was actually the baby John who leaped for joy when Mary greeted her relative Elizabeth. John had an important mission to fulfill and appears to have had a spiritual cognition of the earthly mother of his Lord and Master. It also appears that Mary, who apparently conceived about six months after Elizabeth, was herself pregnant by this time. Remember that it was the Savior Himself who later said of John that "[a]mong those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist." (Luke 7:28)
