What is the law concerning age difference dating in teens?

I have heard that it is illegal for anyone under 18 or older to date anyone 17 or younger. The 18 year old, although in high school, is still an adult of legal age and that can lead to grave consequences for the older person if the relationship takes a turn for the worse.
