In addition to genetic factors, several other risk factors can contribute to the likelihood of having a baby with a neural tube defect (NTD). These include maternal Diabetes, obesity, certain medications (like antiepileptic drugs), and inadequate folic acid intake before and during early pregnancy. Additionally, environmental factors, such as exposure to high temperatures or certain toxins, may also play a role. Maternal age and a history of previous NTD-affected pregnancies can further increase the risk.
