What was British society like in World War 2?

The British people during world war two did not approach the announcement of war with Germany as enthusiastically as they did when the first world war was announced. Great crowds of people did not flood the streets in celebration of their nations new responsibility. However they did grit their teeth and get down to business.The british people's attitude during the blitz in 1940 was one of extreme resiliance to hardships which they endured. Hitler hoped he could destroy the nation's will to fight when he reverted to bombing the cities in September 1940. This proved unsuccessful. The successes in North Africa at El Alemein were to prove significant boosts for public morale. Churchill's speech in the commons sums up this view for me, "This is not the end, it is not even the begginning of the end, but it is perhaps the end of the begginnning".
