The types of skills you need to be a hospital nurse are good communication skills, patients, sometimes a steady hand, and of course kindness
In addition to these sterling qualities (and good general nursing training), a hospital nurse needs to be able to handle multiple demands made of her, some of them simultaneous, so she needs to be good at prioritizing and organizing her tasks. She needs to be detail oriented, but also able to step back and see the whole picture and the whole patient. She needs to be able to assess and act quickly and appropriately, and be able to deal with a wide variety of personalities without losing her cool. She needs to be a good listener and a good teacher. She needs to know how work within a large organization, following protocols, and when (and how) to question medical orders. She is first and foremost a patient advocate. A good pair of shoes and a good sense of humor are invaluable.
