What is the penalty in golf if you play holes out of sequence?

If in strokeplay medal play, the penalty as defined by the rules book is disqualification, providing you failed to hole out and did not correct your mistake before teeing off on the next hole. But usually what happens is you hand in your card with a non-returned score and you will get 0.1 back. In stableford there is no penalty, you just enter a no score.
