What does succeeding mean?

The Word "succeeding" has two main definitions, firstly, it means to win, in a goal, or achievement, such as, succeeding in getting the job you wanted, or succeeding in winning ten pounds you wanted on a scratch-card. The second meaning, is the follow, or come after. For instance, 9 succeeds 8, and Mr. Andrew Johnson succeeded President Abraham Lincoln.
