Father Damien arrived on the island of Molokai in 1873. He went there to provide care and support for individuals suffering from leprosy (Hansen's disease), who were isolated from the mainland. His dedication to the leper colony made him a significant figure in humanitarian efforts and he became known for his compassionate service until his own death from the disease in 1889.
