The Truman administration existed at a time when moderates on both sides still roamed the plains of American politics. It has never been known as an Administration that violated American's rights and freedoms. He did however (under much Republican pressure) start the 'loyalty reviews' that investigated whether public servants did not engage in un-American activities and that could get them fired if they were suspected of Communist or Socialist sympathies. In his time however the persons accused had the right to proper defence and appeal. It was the subsequent Eisenhower administration that seriously curbed the rights of defendants in loyalty review-cases; a policy that finally led to the witch-hunts of the McCarthy era.
