Why does Odysseus giving away his name to Polyphemus cause him so much trouble?

Odysseus says his name because of his pride. Back then people could curse other people if they knew the name of the person. Till then the Cyclops thought that his name was Nobody. The Cyclops is Poseidon's son. This made Poseidon steer them of course and later wreck his ship.
