C.R. Alder Wright first synthesized diamorphine (heroin), in 1874.
Felix Hoffman re-synthesized it in 1897 while working for Bayer (the makers of Aspirin). The company marketed it as a cough suppressant, and called it heroin because some of their employees claimed it made them feel "heroic".
