Why did the European explorers come to the New World looking for the Northwest Passage?

They wanted to find a quicker sea route to Asia from western Europe, without having to sail around South America. The only route, through northern Canada and the Arctic Ocean, was icebound for most of the year, so there was no shortcut until the Panama Canal was built.
