How do you fix dashboard that has died VW polo 2002?

I was puzzled when my digal odometer display dissapeared for nearly a year,brought it to a garage and they said it needed lots of new crap,so i left it.just before the xmas i needed a new battery and i put it in and the disply works ever since.
