Somewhere between a couple dozen and several thousand, depending on the makeup company. Makeup companies are not all the same; the companies that make mass-market makeup like Cover Girl and Revlon employ more than the companies that make department store makeup (which, as it turns out, is made primarily by Estee Lauder, who also makes MAC and Clinique), and those companies employ more than the companies that make theatrical makeup.
