Most of the time, the road will be marked to show you whether you can legally pass. If there is a double yellow line in the middle of the road, passing is illegal. If the line is dashed on your side of the road, or if there is only a dashed line, then you can pass. Of course, when a car is coming towards you in the lane you would use to pass, passing is not a good idea.

If the road is not marked, here are some times when you shouldn't pass:

  • there is a hill, blind curve, roadside foliage, or anything else up ahead that limits your visibility
  • there are many cars in front of you and it would be necessary to pass all of them

The main rule is use your best judgement. If passing might endanger you or anyone else on the road, it's best to not pass.
