In 1818, the United States and Britain agreed to establish the border at the 49th parallel between the US and what is now Canada in the region known as the Oregon Country. This agreement helped to clarify territorial claims in the Pacific Northwest and laid the groundwork for future negotiations regarding the Oregon Territory. The border extended from the Lake of the Woods in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west. This arrangement was part of a broader effort to settle competing interests in North America.
