Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not as successful in gaining support from blacks in the North as he was in the South. Northern politicians were concerned with image and votes. Therefore they responded very little to King's actions in order to avoid media publicity. Northerners already within the movement wanted a more militant approach than King offered. He also opposed the Vietnam War which lost him favor with a still patriotic citizenry.
