How hot are most mountains?

Most mountains have temperatures that vary significantly based on altitude, geographical location, and season. Generally, temperatures decrease with elevation; for instance, the average temperature drops about 3.5°F (2°C) for every 1,000 feet (300 meters) of ascent. In high mountains, temperatures can be quite cold, often remaining below freezing even in summer. However, lower elevations on mountains can experience much warmer temperatures, especially in tropical or temperate regions.
