What does the black stripe on the Belgiun flag mean?

The black band (or, stripe) on the flag of Belgium represents the protective density and power of a shield. Located on the far left (or, hoist) side of the flag, it is distinctly separated from the gold band, which represents a lion, and the red band on the far end, which represents the claws and tongue of the "national lion".
