The Speaker of the House of Commons presides over the house of commons proceedings and controls the debates and behaviour of the members of parliament.

The speaker is also a member of parliament but his role is non-partisan and does not take part in debates nor policy making by the government so he is not a member of the cabinet. On acceptance of the position, he will renounce affiliation with his party. It is usual that after leaving the office, the retired speaker will continue to play no part in party politics.
