Why do the running numbers given out to runners in the London Marathon go much higher than the actual amount of runners?

Because there was probably previous Marathons before the London Marathon. Example - a runner in a Marathon could have the number 1498 when there is only 357 people running there with him/her. The next Marathon might have less people but even higher numbers.
