Women were the domestic anchors in both societies. However the Greek woman was expected to remain at home and take care of household business while the Roman woman had much more freedom to go out and move about. Now Greek women were not prisoners in their homes, but if they went out it was with the knowledge and permission of their husbands and always with an escort. An unescorted woman was considered no better than a prostitute. Greek women (wives, that is) were never in attendance at a dinner or symposium. Roman women had the same freedom of movement as the men. Some of them even ran prosperous businesses. An upper or middle class Roman lady would, like her Greek sisters, be escorted when she went out, but this was mainly for safety and ease in getting through the sometimes crowded streets. Roman women attended dinners, theaters and other public gatherings along with their husbands. The Greek women did not.
