What is a CVV2?

CVV2, or Card Verification Value 2, is a three- or four-digit security code found on Credit and Debit Cards, typically printed on the back for Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, or on the front for American Express. It provides an additional layer of security for online and card-not-present transactions, helping to verify that the cardholder is in possession of the card. Merchants often require the CVV2 during transactions to reduce the risk of fraud.
