Well, darling, the Julian date is simply the number of days that have passed since the "Julian Period" - way back when Julius Caesar was strutting his stuff. Calculating it is a bit of a pain - you basically take the number of days that have passed since noon of January 1, 4713 BC and voila, there you have it.
