From the few historical arrows I have seen, and modern examples of techniques used to make them I must say that; Hand made arrows in traditional methods are not straight - they are "close" and that is what the fletching (feathers) are for. You may actually be surpised by the availability of arrow shaft materials if you look hard enough for that particular thing. Many small tree limbs, new growths, and even river reeds are very straight (or at least straight enough) to produce arrow shafts.
