The Romans used herbs, ointments, and various compounds of ingredients for an illness or an internal distress or a burn injury. If a person had a wound, it would be cleaned with wine,( the alcohol being an antiseptic) probed to remove any foreign material and then bound with strips of clean linen soaked with a healing agent. This healing agent could be wine or honey or some other liquefied herbal, it would all depend on the preferences of the physician. If the wound were too large for binding, it would be stitched using horsehair. They also had many surgical instruments which are the same as our modern doctors use. They carried out cataract surgery, trepanation (brain surgery)to relieve pressure in the skull and even some types of cosmetic surgery.
