How can a rough value of the focal length of a convex lens be obtained?

Focus the rays of the sun, or a distance light to the smallest point that you can get. The distance from that image to the centre of the lens is the focal length.

With the the sun's rays, make sure they are focused onto something which is not flammable. If using another light source, try one that is as far away as possible.
